Litecoin address format
As our Litecoin implementation is brand new, the LTC addresses we use and support are the M-type Segwit addresses. To avoid confusion with Bitcoin SegWit2x addresses, Litecoin changed the format of addresses with a '3'-prefix to ones with a 'M' prefix. This change affects the whole address, not just a part of it.Normally, the bech32 addresses are prefixed with the number 3, like on Bitcoin. Since Litecoin is a fork of Bitcoin, by default, it has the same format. Unfortunately, this can lead to confusion with users who accidentally send Bitcoin to P2SH Litecoin addresses or accidentally send Litecoin to P2SH Bitcoin addresses. This address can be used to send funds to other addresses as well. The Bech 32 address format is different from P2 addresses. These start with bc1 and they are longer than legacy or P2SH addresses. Bech32 is the native SegWit address format and it is supported by most software and hardware wallets. Most of the exchanges do not support this.
It can be encoded in a number of different formats. Below we show the Litecoin Address and Public Key that corresponds to your Private Key as well as your Private Key in the most popular encoding formats (WIF, WIFC, HEX, B64). Litecoin v0.6+ stores public keys in compressed format. The two address changes we’re referring to are Litecoin’s “SegWit (P2SH)” format, and Bitcoin Cash’s “Cash Address” format — also known as “Cash Addr”. Litecoin SegWit.Litecoin uses exactly the same procedure to generate addresses, the only difference is the network prefix. On step 4 (Add version byte in front of RIPEMD-160 hash) instead of 0x00 for bitcoin use 0x30 for Litecoin main-net or

In order to resolve this confusion, the Litecoin community developed a new address format that is prefixed with M, a format that would not be valid on Bitcoin. The underlying private and public key pair are the same, but the hashing algorithm for displaying the public key is altered Litecoin address format. This means that 3- and M- addresses are both interchangeable for the purposes of movement of funds on the Litecoin blockchain.New Addresses in short. Litecoin changes the format of some of its addresses. L-addresses are non-P2SH (non-SegWit) addresses and they remain unchanged (Legacy Litecoin accounts). All addresses starting with “3” will now begin with “M”. (The entire address changes, not just the prefix.) This will not affect your litecoin holdings.Adding support for Litecoin is an important next step in that direction. The new Wallet update with Litecoin support will roll out to all users on iOS and Android over the next few weeks. LTC support is activated by default — all you need to do is tap ‘Receive’ on the main wallet tab and select Litecoin to send LTC to your Coinbase Wallet.
